Dunajec Gorge: Traditional Raft Route Through Pieniny

The Dunajec gorge between Szczawnica and Krościenko carries traditional wooden rafts guided by highlanders in folk dress. The 18 km stretch passes limestone cliff formations rising above 300 metres.

What This Site Covers

Poland's river network stretches across several distinct geographic zones — from the Tatra foothills in the south to the lake districts of Mazuria and Podlaskie in the north. Each region presents different conditions for water travel.

This site covers the navigable routes, seasonal access windows, logistical considerations, and the character of specific stretches. Coverage focuses on publicly documented waterways with established tourism infrastructure or documented expedition use.

Route details draw on publicly available sources including the Polish Canoeing Association (PZKaj), regional PTTK guides, and documented expedition accounts.

Route Types Covered

  • Traditional wooden raft routes (spływ flisacki)
  • Multi-day kayaking expeditions
  • White-water rafting in mountain gorges
  • Slow-water canoe routes through marshland
  • Canal and lake-chain navigation routes

Seasonal Overview

Spring (March–May)

Snowmelt from the Tatras raises water levels in southern rivers significantly. The Dunajec runs fast and cold. Mountain routes require experienced paddlers. Lowland rivers are navigable but may have high banks.

Summer (June–August)

The main season for organized river tourism. Water temperatures are comfortable for kayaking. The Czarna Hańcza and Biebrza routes are fully operational. Traditional rafting on the Dunajec runs daily.

Autumn (September–October)

Reduced tourist volumes on most routes. Water remains navigable through October on lowland rivers. The Biebrza marshes are particularly active with migratory bird activity in September.
